Julie Smith has been at Collins Hill since January 2007.  She grew up in Fairfax County, Virginia participating in lacrosse, Latin Club, NLHS, Math Honor Society, Yearbook, dance, and band.  Ms. Smith took 4 years of Latin in high school, taking the AP exam in her junior year.  She attended the University of Georgia for her undergraduate work in genetics.  Eventually she realized that her true passion was Latin and the classics.  In her years at UGA she was the President of the classical honor society, Eta Sigma Phi, and studied abroad in Rome.  She graduated with degrees in Latin, Classical Culture, and Foreign Language Education.  She just finished her MA in Latin with a final project on Satire 3 by Juvenal.  At Collins Hill she sponsors the Junior Classical League (Latin Club) and the National Latin Honor Society.  She has coached lacrosse for three years and freshmen volleyball for two.  She is currently the JV volleyball coach.  She is an active member in professional organizations, such as FLAG, ACL, CAMWS, and GCA.  In 2009, Ms. Smith presented a paper on the Tomb of the Haterii in Oklahoma City at a CAMWS meeting.  She serves currently as a co-Creative Arts chair for the Georgia Junior Classical League, and as the President of the Georgia Classical Association.  Her passion is art history and she hopes to expand her students horizons and help them find something in the subject that they can connect with.
